Founded in the UK in 2023, we are a team of educators with a passion for diversity and inclusion. We exist to fill a gap between the need for more equitable access to quality, inclusive physics education and the professional development needs of educators to make that happen.
Increasingly, physicists are attending to ethical matters related to systemic oppression and underrepresentation of marginalised groups, particularly with respect to women, people of colour, people in LGBTQ+ communities, and people with disabilities. We leverage our extensive teaching and leadership experience in the education sector, our passion for diversity and inclusion, and our own lived experiences, to specialise in curriculum development and training for science educators.
As educators, we recognise and understand the myriad of challenges faced by the sector at large and within individual schools and communities. We understand the pressures of delivering an overloaded curriculum, often in challenging circumstances, as well as the drain on resources – both in terms physics expertise, and in terms of scientific training and equipment.
Our approach to supporting schools, colleges and universities is therefore based on a shared knowledge and recognition of these challenges, and together, finding ways to enact sustainable changes that develop educators and improve the quality of physics education for children and young people. Our approach centres the following two principles:
Jon studied theoretical physics at Imperial College London, before embarking on a teaching career in secondary and further education. Co-founder of The Blackett Lab Family – a national network of UK based Black physicists – he is passionate about widening access to STEM for traditionally excluded and underrepresented young people. He is a writer and series editor for Oxford University Press, authoring the Teacher Workbook for AQA GCSE Physics. A former Assistant Headteacher and school governor, he now advises schools, trusts and higher education institutions on all things science and curriculum, and DEI strategy.
